Build advanced ARIA components without guessing.
Modern web apps demand more than native HTML. Get ARIA wrong and you break the experience for people using screen readers and other assistive technology. Get it right and your widgets behave predictably, read clearly, and feel native.
In this course, you’ll learn how to build complex, accessible components with confidence. You’ll unpick how ARIA really works so you can stop copy-pasting snippets and start reasoning about roles, states, and properties.
By the end, you’ll be able to
Understand what ARIA is and how roles, states, and properties differ
Apply correct roles, states, and properties to build accessible widgets, following patterns from the W3C ARIA Authoring Practices Guide
Implement expected keyboard interaction with Tab, Enter, Space, Arrow keys, and Escape, aligned with proper focus management
Map relationships with attributes like aria-controls, aria-describedby, and aria-activedescendant, and predict what a screen reader will announce from real HTML
Why this course?
ARIA components are tricky to implement. I work with teams facing these exact challenges every day. I’ve done the heavy lifting of interpreting guidelines, testing with multiple screen readers, and learning from the accessibility community so you can add components such as comboboxes, tabs, and dialogs with confidence.
We use patterns from the W3C ARIA Authoring Practices Guide, but translate them into practical, implementation-focused steps. You will learn to prefer native HTML first, then layer ARIA only where it is actually needed.
How it's structured
Each lecture focuses on one ARIA concept and ends with a short knowledge check that stretches you with realistic scenarios.
Most lessons are about 5 minutes, and none run longer than 10 minutes.
You’ll:
Break down complex widgets into roles, states, and properties
Build and test ARIA functionality with confidence
Work with runnable CodePen examples you can copy, paste, and explore
What’s coming next
New units land regularly with fresh components to build which are always practical and accessible.
Upcoming components include:
Tabs - added 10/02/2026
Accordion - added 26/05/2026
Alert
Dialog (Modal)
Disclosure (Show/Hide)
Listbox
